What to record:

You can pick one or multiple harmonies to record, depending on what seems most comfortable for your voice and what you think sounds the best. You can preview what the different harmonies sound like and then download the ones you want to sing along to (click on “Free” to download)!

The lyrics to all the parts are “They can tell, they can tell, they can tell!"

How to record:

Listen to the guidance track on headphones (important) and sing along to the vocals in the register that is most comfortable to you (you can for example sing the highest harmony but an octave lower). Listen to the metronome to know when the vocals start (BPM=156) - there are 4 bars (with 4 clicks each) before you should start singing. A piano will play the first note of the melody 1 bar before the vocals start to help you stay in tune.

Programs you can use: Garageband (on Mac), Audacity, Reaper, Bandlab (android and iphone). If you can't make any of that work you can listen to the guidance track on your phone while recording yourself in some basic recording app!

Recording tips:

  • The vocals (esp. lower registers and harmonies) should sound intense , so don't be afraid to be a bit aggressive with it - also try not to lose the energy on the last note (just don't hurt your voice in the process, please - maybe do some vocal warm-ups beforehand)
  • Keep the same timing as my vocals but don't try to sound the same otherwise, do it in your own way!
  • Keep your microphone at a bit of a distance (10-30cm)
  • Clearly enunciate the consonants
  • Make sure your recording isn't clipping (the left one is good, the right one is too loud and clipping. If you are recording in a way where you don't see a waveform like this, just listen if you can hear crackles in the loud parts - it's better for it to be too quiet rather than too loud!)
  • Don't go crazy trying to create perfect takes and don't be scared to sound silly! I will make sure that whatever you record will be pitch-corrected and edited if it stands out negatively in the mix without it! As it's a choir, there is much more leeway with pitch - the important thing is to capture all kinds of different types of voices and to keep it high energy. I hope you have FUN creating something with me! :) There is no looming deadline either so don't feel rushed! Take your time!

Where to send the vocals:

Send your vocals (only your vocals without the guidance track being audible) as wav files if you can (if you don't know what that means, use whatever files your recording program/app can spit out) and send them to info@bellabeth.com.
